34th Street

34th Street is Ready for December

Set with food, flowers, and fashion, the 34th Street District is prepped for a busy season.

Jane Kratochvil

With more than 175 stores, specialty shops, boutiques and national chain flagships, the 34th Street District is ready for the annual Christmas rush. The center of all the action is at the intersection of Broadway, 34th Street, and Sixth Avenue, ringed by Macy’s Herald Square, Victoria’s Secret, Gap and the H&M flagship store at Herald Center. From there, the shopping corridor stretches east and west and, thanks to Urban Outfitters at 1333 Broadway, a bit north.

While you’re shopping, take a break by sitting down at our public spaces at Herald Square Park, Greeley Square Park, and Broadway Boulevard. There are chairs, tables, and umbrellas available to anyone who needs to rest, eat lunch, or just people-watch. If your famished, visit Wafels & Dinges at Herald Square for sweet or savory waffles, a scrumptious Spekuloos milkshake, and a full range of espresso drinks. At Greeley Square, Nuchas offers handmade empanadas and medialunas, along with full coffee service from La Colombe.

While you’re shopping, check out our planters lining the street. Director of Horticulture Maureen Hackett has them decked out in holiday finery with a combination of boxwoods, Picea alberta conica (spruce) and English Ivy. For the planters in front of Macy’s Herald Square, Hackett accented the boxwoods with ivy. The planters in Herald and Greeley Squares feature a combination of all of these evergreen species along with Pieris japonica and Chaemycyparis. This will be a dynamic arrangement, as the Pieris’ dark green foliage will turn mahogany-red as winter deepens, and the plants will produce dark red winter flower buds, setting a great holiday season for visitors and shoppers alike.
